St Joe's UNICO Honors Athletes with Brian Piccolo Award
Brian Piccolo Award
(l-r) Michael Toepert, Chapter President Robert Kievit and Kayla Quigley

On May 7, 2014, UNICO District IX held its annual Brian Piccolo Awards Dinner at the Florentine Gardens in Rivervale, New Jersey.  The award is given annually by each UNICO chapter across the country to a male and female high school athlete of Italian descent that has excelled in sport and overcome adversity and/or excelled in the class room.  The award has been presented to thousands of athletes since its inception in 1975, and  is named after the Chicago Bears running back of the late 1960's that inspired his team mates before succumbing to cancer in 1970.
This marked the 1st time that the presentation would include athletes nominated by the recently chartered chapter from St Joseph High School in Montvale.  The chapter made its own history in October of 2013 by being the first high school based chapter in the 92 year history of the organization which is normally community based.

The Chapter's female honoree was Kayla Quigley of Emerson, NJ who attends the Academy of Holy Angels in Demarest.  Kayla is an outstanding student in the classroom and is a three sport athlete participating in soccer, basketball and softball. According to her Athletic Director, Patti Gorsuch, ", she is the type of athlete that will sacrifice everything for the sake of her team.". During her junior year she played every position on the softball field except pitcher and catcher, simply because they needed her to. She will be attending Villanova University in the Fall of 2014.

In a historic moment, the male honoree from the St Joe's H.S. Montvale Chapter was announced as Michael Toepert, a Special Olympics NJ athlete from Waldwick, NJ who attends ECLC of NJ at Ho-Ho-Kus.  Michael was introduced by Marc Edenzon, the President of Special Olympics NJ. As far as anyone is aware, Michael is the first Special Olympian to be honored with this award since its inception in 1975. Michael was honored for overcoming a variety of physical and mental issues in his life and ultimately being named to represent NJ as member of TEAM NJ volleyball that will participate in the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games to be held in June right here in New Jersey
. (Update: Team NJ won the Gold Medal at the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games)
